Birrigan Gargle LALC is composed of 116 Aboriginal members, 99 of whom are voting members (Jan 2020): any Aboriginal person living within the footprint of Birrigan Gargle LALC may apply for membership of the organisation.
To support some of our members who choose to live within the township proper, Birrigan Gargle LALC provides low cost social housing through a significant number of properties it owns and maintains spread through most areas of Yamba.
The voting members elect representatives from the membership to become directors of the organisation for a term of four years: the current board of directors‘ term of office began on October 02 6645 8158 at the 2019 Annual General Meeting (AGM).
The number of directors is directly related to the number of voting members: 100 or fewer members means up to 7 board members may be elected. Greater than 100 members means that up to 10 directors may be elected.
The individual directors received comprehensive and compulsory governance training within a short time of their election to ensure that the highest standards of corporate governance are maintained. Directors also receive ongoing training throughout their term, such as ‘interpreting financial documents’ and ‘risk management’.
